Night Out: Lucha Britannia, London

A last minute decision to accompany a new friend on a night out meant I didnt take my camera with me because I wasnt sure if it was the type of place I could carry around a DSLR. I wasnt even sure what sort of night were attending.

Boy was a pleasantly surprised!

We parked in a quite road somewhere in East London and entered a non-de script door to find ourselves in a tiny venue crammed full of people and a boxing wring.  In the boxing ring were masked wrestlers, a compère who looked like he had walked out of Rocky Horror Picture Show and two gorgeous ring ladies dressed in latex lingerie.

We had found ourselves at Lucha Britannia, something I’d never heard of before being that I’ve not lived in a vibrant city for six years.  London has so much going on these days, performance art is BIG.

So, all I had with me was my trusty iPhone so please overlook the grainy quality!

He can wrestle me any day…

Yes, he is strangling him in the ropes.

Ring ladies in latex.

Ring lady Miss Miranda.

Yum.

LOVED the compère.

I was really excited to see a female wrestler and yes, she kicked ass!

8 person wrestling match to finish the night!

I will definitely be visiting again and taking my camera with me!  Here’s a little video of the fabulous compère and Miss Miranda introducing the next round of wrestling contestants.  Unfortunately my iPhone ran out of memory before they arrived!

Restaurant Review: Le Comptoir – Lebanais

My mother was visiting this weekend gone before she jetted off to Australia for six weeks (so jealous!) and so we paid a visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum as I had never been and had recently re watched The Young Victoria starring one of my favourite actresses, Emily Blunt.  The movie tells the story of Queen Victoria and how she met and married Prince Albert.  It is such a beautiful story I was inspired to go to the museum built in their honour.  My most favourite part was the section on Japanese art and design and I was immediately inspired to go eat at a Japanese restaurant!

Instead, we found ourselves inside Le Comptoir – Lebanais just round the corner from the museum.  It was a bitterly cold evening and the place was packed full of people.  We were greeted by friendly staff and seated immediately as we were lucky enough to get the last table available.  Comptoir Lebanais means Lebanese counter and this restaurant chain has been voted one of BBC’s top 10 healthiest restaurants.

Their menu offers a unique selection of lemonades and we chose the pomegranate and orange blossom flavour.  It was SO refreshing, just the kind of drink you want in a hot mediterranean country which this restaurant was themed on.  There was a flavour in the drink, however, that we just couldnt place, very unusual and yet delicious!  I really liked that they had something so different and interesting on the menu.

We opted for a tagine each, mine being the aubergine and tomato and my mom got the lamb and chickpea, both on a bed of perfectly light and fluffy couscous.  Our tagines were served in clay bowls and arrived almost immediately which was wonderful since we were starving after a couple hours staring at museum items.

On the restaurant walls between beautiful and colourful artwork, were shelves displaying gorgeous embroidered baskets from Marrakech and kaftans for sale and behind the service bar were silver jugs for sale.  I also noticed down the back of the restaurant a sort of pantry with all kinds of bottled Mediterranean goodies to take home with you.

Our bill came to less than £25 and we would definitely visit again to sample more of their exciting menu!  They have branches at Westfield Shopping Centre, Stratford, Wigmore Street and South Kensington.

Visit their website here to find out more about this great place.

Argan Oil is Wonder Oil!

In my quest to use as little chemicals in my cosmetics and home cleaning products, I have taken to using oils as a body moisturiser.

In the past I have used Coconut oil which is incredibly good for your skin, hair and your diet for so many reasons but I got tired of smelling like coconuts all the time!

Then I moved onto Jojoba oil which I found very nice and did the job nicely.  But of course I want to try out all kinds of oils so my next oil, inspired by this article from Organic Authority is Argan Oil.

Its thick and wonderful and gives instant payback!  My skin looks plump and younger the next day even after a day of drinking!  I LOVE it!  Not to mention how soft and supple I feel!

The only thing I DON’T like about it is that it smells like a jar of olives and I HATE the smell of olives!  However, in the interest of health and beauty, I have allowed myself to enjoy a full body massage from my man using this oil and I can tell you my skin felt soft and supple and wonderful all day the next day even though I left a body shaped oil mark on my sheets!

Argan Oil is/has:

  • scar-diminishing
  • anti-inflammatory
  • sun-protective
  • disinfectant properties
  • wrinkle-reducing
  • stretch mark prevention (hey pregnant mamas!)
  • neutralises free radical damage
  • soothes chickenpox
  • acne relief
  • ease psoriasis and dry eczema

I’m excited about it as I have had an ongoing battle with deep acne scaring on my face that I would love to diminish without invasive procedures and chemicals – so far so good!

The good news is, you can buy Argan Oil from Amazon, I like to go for virgin, organic oils to get them as close to their natural state as possible, as processing diminishes their effectiveness.

A couple days ago I got a bit sunburned so I immediately slathered on the Argan Oil and Ive had no pealing and minimal pain and my skin feels soft and healthy instead of dry and taught. I also hear its all the rage at the moment! :)

The Books That Changed My Life

Becoming a (free) woman

Lifestyle

  • Last American Man
A biography of an amazing man who grew up in the forest out the back of his home and became someone completely connected to nature who’s mission is to teach the world about nature and remind us of our deep connection to it.
  • Radical Simplicity: Creating an Authentic Life
An autobiography by a man who felt driven to live simply in various self-made abodes in forests and fields and the lessons he learned on his journey.  A joyful, quick read with illustrations by the author.  If you loved Thoreau’s Walden, you will love this (also its not so convoluted!)
  • How to Live Off-grid
Currently reading, but being a bit of a hippie myself, the idea of living disconnected from the electrical and water grid, and therefor, not under government/tax man thumb to an extent, excites me.  The author buys a live-in van and travels the United Kingdom meeting people who live off-grid and imparts the lessons he learned on the way.
  • The Moneyless Man: A Year of Freeconomic Living
Another current read.  The author decides, for various reasons that he explains, to live a year without money.  He is not allowed to earn or spend any money, living self-sufficiently and with limited help from others.  A very interesting read that opens the mind to exactly what we need to survive and how different life is when we aren’t spending and living to work.
  • The Secret
I’m always surprised when I meet people who have never heard of this famous book.  It teaches the Law of Attraction which is understanding that our thoughts become our reality and the power of this and how to wield this power for a good life.
  • Think and Grow Rich
The precursor to The Secret written many years ago, every time I read this book, good things happen in my life.
  • Out of it: A Cultural History of Intoxication
The book that helped me renounce organised religion.  It probably wont do the same for you, that’s not its intention, but I was thinking a lot of things about being christian back then and how it tied into being a human and so on, and this book just enlightened me.  The book is about the history of intoxication, from roots and plants in BC ages to nicotine, alcohol and party drugs in these ages.
  • How To Win Friends And Influence People
A famous book by Dale Carnegie, this book should be read in high school.  In valuable tips on how to make people feel comfortable and liked and in turn win friends and influence people.  TIP: People love the sound of their own name, use it!

Id love to know what books have made a big change in your life, let us know in the comments!
