My First Instameet with Mackie Studios

December 12, 2016

I attended my first “instameet” this weekend organised by Karl Mackie at Mackie Studios, a local photography and design studio in Newquay. I’d seen other content producers going on or organising instameets so I jumped at the chance to meet other people into photography and social media and of course to photograph my beautiful coastal town.

We were blessed with an absolutely beautiful day. Not a cloud in the sky and so warm I didn’t need to wear a coat! At least 30 people showed up and after about a half hour of introducing ourselves and chatting, we all set off towards the river we know as The Gannel where leisure sail boats are moored, paddle boarders slip by and wild swimmers brave the cold water.

This path leads to the Pentire Headland, past envy inducing houses overlooking the river Gannel and Crantock beach which was absolutely shining in the afternoon sun, beautifully lighting the fantastic swell rolling in from the Atlantic.

Eventually we rounded the headland to visit famous British surfing beach, Fistral and it was just as happy with winter waves and surfers having the time of their lives. I’m not a cold water surfer but even I was wishing I were in the water!

After three hours of walking and shooting and chatting we were all pretty tired and took a break at Fistral Beach to grab a hot chocolate and wait for the sun to set.

It was a fantastic day and I got to practice taking photos with my 50mm 1.4 lens which I haven’t shot with for a long time. I like the challenge of having such a limited lens and feel like I did pretty well despite being an amateur when it comes to photography.

The whole crew used hashtag #mackieinstameet so if you look it up on Instagram you can see some of the other photos people shot.

Check out Mackie Studios for their design work and follow them on Instagram and Facebook for some great coastal shots. Karl Mackie has a burning passion for what he does which I immediately discovered when I called his name and he looked up from behind his camera with a big kid grin! I think he was the only one not tuckered out from all that walking! That’s passion for you!
