Last night I had the good fortune of attending my first ever roller derby! Having seen Whip It when it came out years ago, it had piqued my interest so I was really looking forward to seeing it for real.
As Im currently visiting friends in Cornwall, we were watching the Cornwall Roller Derby girls battle out in a Fright Night – Vamps V Zombies themed bout which took place inside a gymnasium. I had no idea how the game actually worked for the first part and was fiercely trying to capture the action on my camera but I don’t really know how to take ‘sports’ photos! When I eventually figured the game out, I was screaming for the jammers! It was exhilarating!
Unfortunately the movies gave me expectations of punch ups and more crashes etc, but it was pretty mild with a few good jams and sacrifices however.
I loved that there were girls of all shapes and sizes and strengths and they all had their part to play. They were tough and crafty and inspiring! Hopefully I can get to interview one of these awesome chicks soon!
There were some great stalls selling some awesome roller derby t shirts and apparel and this lovely lady was selling these awesome monkeys! Visit her site, I’m A Crafty Monkey, to get your own, personally, I wanted them ALL!
LOVE these booty shorts! Visit Roller Derby City for all the roller derby gear you can get.
At the end of the game, every lines up on the side of the track to smack hands with the players, that was awesome!
The ‘Vamps’ were the winners 🙂
I have to say, my favourite roller derby name was Smack Daniels. Pure genius!
Im actually quite keen to give it a go myself! I have broad shoulders for nudging, small boobs that don’t get in the way or squished if I fall on my face and a big ass to land on comfortably haha!
Do you play roller derby? What’s your favourite roller derby name? Let us know in the comments!
