If You’re Not A Feminist, You’re Ignorant

This morning I woke up thinking about Feminism.  Yes, that scary “F” word most people know nothing about.  I didnt know anything about it either once.  I was also the person who thought it was bad to be seen as a Feminist.

And then I came across this:

The following day, I attended a workshop about preventing gender violence, facilitated by Katz. There, he posed a question to all of the men in the room: “Men, what things do you do to protect yourself from being raped or sexually assaulted?”

Not one man, including myself, could quickly answer the question. Finally, one man raised his hand and said, “Nothing.” Then Katz asked the women, “What things do you do to protect yourself from being raped or sexually assaulted?” Nearly all of the women in the room raised their hand. One by one, each woman testified:

“I don’t make eye contact with men when I walk down the street,” said one.
“I don’t put my drink down at parties,” said another.
“I use the buddy system when I go to parties.”
“I cross the street when I see a group of guys walking in my direction.”
“I use my keys as a potential weapon.”

The women went on for several minutes, until their side of the blackboard was completely filled with responses. The men’s side of the blackboard was blank. I was stunned. I had never heard a group of women say these things before. I thought about all of the women in my life — including my mother, sister and girlfriend — and realized that I had a lot to learn about gender.

Why I Am A Male Feminist

When I was researching what it is to be a Dominatrix, I came across my first Feminist writings.  I learned a lot.  I learned about my history, i.e. Women’s History.  It dawned on me that we are not taught the history of women in schools.  We have no idea who we are or where we come from unless we take it upon ourselves to learn this knowledge.  Its not included in History class, or at least it wasnt in the late 90s when I was in high school.

I never knew there were amazing women who invented things we rely on and take for granted today, or women who fought in the world wars and essentially kept their countries going because of their dedication and hard work.

I never knew the crushing patriarchal system I lived in, that we still live in.  It may be common knowledge now, but I didnt know that women are still being paid less for doing the same job as their male colleagues!  Doesnt that one fact enrage you!?  And why is this allowed?  Because WE DONT KNOW its happening.

Feminism has been given such a bad name that we unknowling shun the very thing that seeks to educate us to the persistent wrongs being done to women to this very day.  Wrongs we are allowing because we dont know any better because we arent learning or being taught because we’ve been made to think that Feminism is bad.

My friends, Feminism will free us all from the constraints we live under.  Feminism is about educating women to the attrocities done to us over the millenia, the atrocities still being done to us in blatant media and society without us even really realising and how it is effecting us as a society.  Not allowing women their full potential is crippling our systems and most importantly the woman we all live on – Mother Earth.

Im still learning about what it means to be a woman and what a woman is OUTSIDE of the parameters of the male definition of women.

This week Ive been watching Dollhouse with my flatmate.  While I love the ass kicking the girls give in the show, it is written with men in mind.  I love everything that makes me feel empowered as a woman, but not when that woman is being an ass kicking babe defined by what is attractive to a man.

Another example: chatting to a couple male friends while they do some DIY about how they should wear nothing but tool belts and they comment on how they’re not gay, no one wants to see that! Um, hello, women have tastes too you know!  If you do any Feminist reading, you will understand what I mean here because you will be taught about how we, as a society, view women.  As non essentials, as second class citizens, as products, objects to be used for male entertainment, as essentially empty and malleable and subconsciously put on a shelf till needed.  See here for an example.

Its unfortunate that so many of us women have no idea who we are and where we come from and what we are capable of or what we deserve.

My entire life I have been bold and forthright and big mouthed and passionate about the things I believe in because I dont just believe anything.  I make up my own mind and before I do that, I put in a lot of research.  I am unafraid to say it like it is.  To “go there”, to shake you up and rock your boat.  I have been through so much hardship in my life, I can handle the backlash because I now have understanding and Im constantly learning and evolving and I am passionate about educating women, enlightening women and leading women into a new era where we stake our rightful claim on what we deserve.

I would like to see more women educating others, male and female.  Simple things like when someone says “stop being such a pussy”.  That sentence right there is derogatory.  It implies that women are weak, which we most certainly are NOT.  How about we say “stop being such a penis” – it would make more sense right?  I mean, pussy can take much more than any penis could!  Things like “you hit like a girl”, again, I would hit as well as any man if I were ever taught how, but being raised a girl, we are limited by societal ideas of what a woman should be.

I dont hate men, I like to wear heels and short skirts, hell I was a stripper once!  I am pro-women, not anti-male.  I am FOR empowering, enlightening and educating women.  I am FOR making up your own mind, thinking for yourself and doing what makes you happy.

In the past few months I’ve been learning about “slut-shaming” and re-educating people on rape culture (can you believe there is a culture of rape!?) summarized in the picture above.  This stuff is important.  We all do it without even knowing how damaging it is to us as a society as a whole.  Feminism is not just for women, it is very much so for men.  The more male feminists there are, the better.  Feminism is a means of education and knowledge is power.  What does that tell you?

Misogyny In Media and How To Recognise It

The following comment is by CokeTalk and raises an important point about how women are still blatantly degraded and shamed in mass media, in turn educating us to how we should view ourselves as women, other women and how men should view us, whether we know it or not.

This may be a campaign about HIV/AIDS awareness, but that’s no excuse. This is blatant misogyny, really sinister stuff that conveys a much more profound message about the female body.

Take another look at it. She’s got a killer smile, but still, you can’t see her eyes. The model is cropped so that she’s essentially headless. What makes her human is gone. What makes her a woman is on display. That’s a very deliberate creative choice.

She is an object to be fucked without a brain or an identity. Worse still, her vagina is a fully indexed destination on a Google map. The visual metaphor is so potent (and porn is so ubiquitous) that this image is more jarring than one in which she shows us her actual pussy.

It’s not about the fact that she’s had sex with Bill Johnson and 19 others. Who gives a fuck? What’s toxic is the idea that they checked into her vagina on Foursquare. It’s saying that her private parts aren’t private at all. They’re public. That’s the implicit message in this image, and it’s degrading as hell.

It’s not slut-shaming so much as it’s female-shaming, and it reinforces the age-old cultural narrative that women’s bodies aren’t their own.

I Got Published!

Towards the end of last year I got an email from an Italian interior design magazine called Brava Casa. They had seen the photos I had taken of Ugly Luggage in New York and asked if they could use some of them for an article they were doing on the vintage store. Of course I obliged and below right is the photo they chose (they even give this site a mention!).

This is the second time I’ve had one of my photos published.  The first was for a tourism website for Brisbane, Australia.  It was a shot of City Beach.  Unfortunately the link to the page died with my other Macbook.

It would be wonderful to continue to have my photography get published!

Street Style: Covent Garden, London

Ever since I moved to London from South Africa back in 1999, I have been fascinated with the unique style of people here.  One of my favourite things to do is capture that moment in style.  Below is a collection from about an hour of standing on a busy corner in Covent Garden and surrounds.

Studded brogues!

I kinda like capturing people going about their business, unaware of the camera, I like documenting who we are in this moment in time.

A Walk In The Park

Today was the first warm and sunny day that we’ve seen in London this year and happily one of my best friends and fellow live/work resident had the day off so we went for coffee, cake and a stroll in the nearby waterway and parks.

We saw Jewish ladies playing tennis in long skirts and boots, a little girl pushed me on the swing and a rasta on a bike said “ooh you looking good” to us as he rode past.

Adventures in over-exposure…

I kinda like the effect the over exposure has had…

And suddenly I felt like I was in Europe!

This lady has an incredible leg tattoo!

What I wore: Leather jacket and gingham dress both from Amazon.co.uk, sunglasses from SportsGirl in Western Australia.  My sunglasses are like my favourite item and Im always afraid I’ve lost them but somehow still own them two years later! Amazing!

iPhone shot.  I was reminded of Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill with the spiked ball on a chain!

Night Out: Lucha Britannia, London

A last minute decision to accompany a new friend on a night out meant I didnt take my camera with me because I wasnt sure if it was the type of place I could carry around a DSLR. I wasnt even sure what sort of night were attending.

Boy was a pleasantly surprised!

We parked in a quite road somewhere in East London and entered a non-de script door to find ourselves in a tiny venue crammed full of people and a boxing wring.  In the boxing ring were masked wrestlers, a compère who looked like he had walked out of Rocky Horror Picture Show and two gorgeous ring ladies dressed in latex lingerie.

We had found ourselves at Lucha Britannia, something I’d never heard of before being that I’ve not lived in a vibrant city for six years.  London has so much going on these days, performance art is BIG.

So, all I had with me was my trusty iPhone so please overlook the grainy quality!

He can wrestle me any day…

Yes, he is strangling him in the ropes.

Ring ladies in latex.

Ring lady Miss Miranda.

Yum.

LOVED the compère.

I was really excited to see a female wrestler and yes, she kicked ass!

8 person wrestling match to finish the night!

I will definitely be visiting again and taking my camera with me!  Here’s a little video of the fabulous compère and Miss Miranda introducing the next round of wrestling contestants.  Unfortunately my iPhone ran out of memory before they arrived!

London Fashion Week 2012: Street Style

I had so much fun shooting all these fabulous people!  I have always wanted to shoot street style, even before it was a “thing”, people fascinate me and I like how it documents who we were at that space in time.

Here are 50 photographs from the day I shot at London Fashion Week at Somerset House.

Can I have her coat please?

LOVE her red glitter shoes!

Full latex drag!

Love that unzipped leather sleeve peeking out.

Sandra of 5inchandup.

She reminded me of Audrey Hepburn.

Nope, not Lady Gaga, its a dude!

Floral trousers are in style right now.

Retro rockabilly without being obvious about it. Love.

She reminded me of Bjork.

Gorgeous red heads are go!

This guy’s coat was just wow, such a gorgeous blood red colour and his silhouette made it a great shot.

Dont know who this lady was but she was giving off some major BAMF vibes.

Amazing jacket, hot legs, put my head on her!

Love the feather bag.

I took about 4 or 5 shots of this girl as she walked towards and past me, loved her style and her DGAF attitude.  This is my fave shot.  Check out that iPhone cover.

No idea who these girls are but the paparazzi went nuts for them.  They were cool tho, laughing the whole time.

These two and their friend were so stylish and good looking and made such a pretty picture against the background of the beautiful Somerset House.  Love her trousers.

I dont know who these ladies are either, photogs went crazy for them too but I am IN LOVE with that pale blue military style dress, really wish any of the shots I took of them were in focus.

Is this M.I.A?  And can I please have her awesome bag!?

These three could be in a fashion editorial shoot.

The girl in the glasses looks exactly like me when I was a teenager, except with better style.

Loved this girl’s style and I keep seeing awesome wedge high tops everywhere right now! I want this pair!

How cute is she!? Smiling while you have a camera in someone’s face always makes them feel better about having their picture taken and look at the result :)

Wish the mint green of her trousers showed up some more in this picture because it balanced the bright orange of her headscarf perfectly.  Im still learning how to take photos on manual settings, so bare with me!

These two were an odd looking pair.  The mask was cat like.  I wonder what country they are from.

Top nots are still in style.

I recognise this guy from somewhere, like a fashion editorial or something.  Highly likely that he is a model.

So annoyed the photos of this lady were not in focus, it was late in the day and heading into evening and my settings were all wrong to let enough exposure in, in time to shoot in focus and she was walking very fast across the street from me.  Want her shoes.

Adore this girl’s outfit, very St Trinian’s badass school girl style.

Do you have a favourite outfit?  Inspired by anything you see?

London Fashion Week Street Style: Accessories

I think I may have been too busy looking at people’s shoes are quirky get ups that I didnt shoot many accessory shots, but here are the ones I did.

Gloves worn by the lovely Sandra of 5inchandup.

I like the layering here.

If anyone knows who this bag is by, let me know!

Neon accents abounded at London Fashion Week.

What do you never leave home without?

London Fashion Week Street Style: Shoes

Since this was my first time ever shooting street style, I found my camera pointed mostly at people’s shoes!  In a couple hours, I shot 32 images of interesting and stylish shoes at London Fashion Week.  People walk so fast in London sometimes it’s hard to get a perfectly clear image as the camera lens doesn’t have time to focus, I lost a few shots of some seriously gorgeous shoes because of this unfortunately.

These are my own shoes, sent to me by a fan from my Amazon wishlist.  They’re by Aldo.

Wedges seem to be very in right now.

SO sexy don’t you think?

The next installment of London Fashion Week Street Style will be coming soon!

Which are your favourite pair?

London Fashion Week Day 1: Highlights

Today I decided to take my camera down to Somerset House and see what I could shoot.  I ended up shooting over 300 photos…

While Ive edited them down somewhat, there are still a whole load Id love to share with you but because its 3am and will take me a while to upload them all into a post on here, Im leaving you with my highlights of the day in the meantime…

This is my favourite photo of the day.  This woman’s curly flame red hair went so beautifully with her deep teal coat and the lighting just made it all pop.

This is my first ever time taking street style photos, Im still figuring out which way the exposure needs to go when the light changes and need to switch over to shooting in RAW for cleaner images too.

I loved the freedom to shoot people up close without them thinking it was strange.  Fashionistas expect photographers to love their style and I sure did my best to capture as much cool and quirky style as I could in the 3 hours I was there.

These beautiful gloves are being worn by the lovely Sandra of 5inchandup who is one of my favourite fashion bloggs.  She was kind enough to chat to me and let me take a couple shots of her gorgeous gloves even though I was a total stranger.  She is just as stunning in person as she is in her photos, even more so actually as she is so sweet and not at all stuck up.

I literally ran after this girl when I spotted her.  No one else seemed interested in her and I was on the other side of the entrance so I am so glad that I got to snap this shot.

I found that I was shooting a lot of people no one else seems to want to shoot.  Everyone was waiting for the fashion famous, none of which I recognised.

This lady’s style really grabbed me, it’s edgy and feminine and I love her hair!

So, that’s all you’re getting for the moment, I will be sleeping most of the day and then working on a more in-depth post from Day 1 of London Fashion Week before heading out to dance the night away with my friends.
